In this video, Dr. Berg talks about ketoacidosis and what to do when you have this condition. There’s a lot of confusion with the words "ketosis" and "ketoacidosis" which both have the common word “keto” but are NOT the same thing.

3 Different Types of Ketoacidosis

1. Alcoholic Ketoacidosis
2. Starvation Ketoacidosis
3. Diabetic Ketoacidosis

5 Abnormal Things about Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Thank you for this video. I was a diabetes specialist nurse and I never really had much confidence to help support my type 1 patients who wished to try keto. I now work with a lovely colleague who has type 1 and is interested in keto and she is a big fan of your vids. ?

Thanks for replies guys. I have moved away from diabetes now and working in geriatrics ? my colleague who has type 1 keeps her background insulin running (she has an insulin pump) so her ketones don’t go mad and she becomes symptomatic. She has the freestyle libre too so can keep a close eye on her blood glucose and ketones.

I love noodles I am definitely not a diabetes nurse nor educator.
I struggle with the paradigm of not needing carbs for energy (at least 85% of mind and body energy?) And so needing ketones and yet not wanting to many of them!
I guess for people without type one diabetes it is easier but for me I kind of see it as similar to not wanting Much glucose in my blood but instead of having insolent to reduce it when I don’t want so many key tones in my blood I have limited tools at my disposal to reduce them – and that is my main concern given the dangers of key terms rising higher. People have said look up Bernstein and look up Jason Fung so I’m off to do that.

Thank you for separating starving and fasting. Starving, no fat left for your body to break down when your body begins to fully begin to break down muscle and organs.
Fasting, water/dry/IF, burning fat for what’s on your body.
Never heard of a fat man starving. Not possible. Lol.

fat or not, still important to replace electrolytes when fasting. Also important to replace vitamins and minerals if you are going for a long time. So even a fat man can starve in a sense.

Dear Dr Berg, I understand that it is critical to keep blood ph in a certain range and that if ph gets too low calcium will be pulled from the bones. If that is correct, is it dangerous to take k2 as it will send the calcium back to the bones and then the blood will be too acidic and give cancer more of a chance to grow? Kindly please explain how all this really works. Thank you so much for all you do to help us. Rosemarie

I am in third week and everybody ask me if i am a reincarnation of an old cow. I feel several symtoms. Cramps, so i took 1/4 teaspoon of potassium citrate. Now i m fine on that. I have moderate to sever fatty liver, confirmed. High triglicerids and colesterol and normal glucose.
I ve lost 8 kg from 3 weeks ago. IF 20h. Question. I have 1 to 1.1 mmol/L of ketons…. Is that ok?

This happened to me while doing keto as a lifestyle but I happened to just come off a two day fast. The doctor said it was mild but implied it was keto because he found ketones in the blood! Lol but I was deficient in electrolytes from my two day fast. Also an infection can raise blood sugars also chronic stress. Two other causes I wanted to add.

You don’t have to have hyperglycemia in order to go into ketoacidosis. I fasted for 2 days and figured hey I’m not eating anything I don’t need to take insulin (both the long acting and the short acting) and I ended up going into ketoacidosis, but my blood sugar was still in normal range. Pretty damn scary actually. I didn’t know what the hell was going on.

@John A Williams it’s a rare thing to happen. You’ll probably be fine on keto. Just being aware is the best thing. Ketoacidosis is different to ketosis. My main symptom of ketoacidosis was a stomach ache. I also had fast breathing and felt strange. A couple of weeks ago I was unwell and unintentionally fasted…I ended up in nutritional ketosis and lost 7lb in 5 days. I’d say watch as many of Dr Berg’s videos as you can to understand the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis, also to learn about how ketosis works.

    2. John A Williams

@Jackie Gough what do you recommend then? I’m not diagnosed with any type diabetes but have been experiencing many of the symptoms for months. Then when I got covid I still did my fast which looking back I should have laid off a bit , and woke up one night body tingling and numb all over and dizzy. I ate a mean bag of salad and started feeling better. But I still had numbness and frequent urination the following days. Not sure if it was covid related or diabetes but blood sugars were ok. I think I’m going to continue keto but will lay off the advanced fasting, especially during an illness before I Jack something up with my body smh

    3. Jackie Gough

Me too. I had it Easter weekend for the second time. I caught it early this time so I was only on a drip. Last time I was in intensive care for four days on dialysis and a normal ward four days. So many people don’t believe this happens

When I tried a keto diet I went into ketoacidosis. One of my type 2 diabetes meds pushes me beyond ketosis into ketoacidosis. I’m trying to get my doctor to pull that medication from my routine.

  7. peacicious

Dr Berg, can we follow keto diet whenever our body gains weight?
My doubt is that would there be any problem if we do it multiple times with some intervals?
Can we use as a fat burning solution for many times whenever there is over weight?

  8. T Est

Thank you for addressing this. Feels like you are addressing this due to my comments, thank you again.
I have some further questions though.

I met my doctor last Thursday and he mentioned euglycemic ketoacidosis.
I’ve tried to get more info but it’s above my understanding as the language is for professionals and I’m not either native English speaker.
Any chance we could get this explained in normal English.

I have asked before if it is posible to get Ketoacidosis on low and normal blood sugar levels. As I’m pretty sure this is what I experienced on my inital carnivore diet that later lead me to keto and to this channel. Now I have a name for it but I don’t understand it and it was quite severe occasion, so I want to avoid having it again.

I treat with my type 1 with insulin (pump) have some blood pressure medicines and adhd medication. No other treatment for my diabetes.

    Thank you.

Are there exceptions after extreme workouts? I’ll walk 8+ miles & the test result will be from 8-16. Wake up the next morning & the result will be back down to 0.5

Thanks. Dr Berg ! I have been on cycling in and out of keto diet for more than years . Last week, I got blood test and said that my fasting insulin was 1.8.( fasting 22 hours ) Is it from ketone body because of long fasting ? Or should I concern about ketoaidosis ? I am not diabetic but my parents are both type 2 diabetic. I definitely used to be pre diabetic before i start to keto . I am doing OMAD now . I have 16-18 % of body fat . I am 43 years old woman .

  11. El Leon Verde

Dr. Berg, would you recommend the use of prescribed diuretics with the Ketosis diet? I have been prescribed hydrochlorothiazide for many years, and I’m already down 60 pounds on keto, putting me at a normal weight range. What adverse effects could the use of water pills have on the organism when on Ketosis?

Thanks a lot and God bless.

I have Type 2 Diabetes and had this happen to me on Friday. I quit taking my insulin on Mother’s Day too help me burn more fat, and things were fine for the past few weeks except my sugars went from 4.2 – 5.2 mmol/L to 5.8 – 6.5 mmol/L. I got frustrated so I took my meal time insulin on Friday thinking it would lower my insulin, and leave me 16 hrs for fat burning. Win Win.
Things were fine until the insulin wore off. My B.S levels were rising, I felt light headed, dizzy, had nausea, shortness of breath, and ended up in emergency. They put me on an IV, my glucose level was 8.2 mmol/L, & my blood beta Hydroxybuterate level was 3.1 mmol/L. So I had a mild case of Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
After 5 hours they sent me home with no further instructions.
My B.S. was still 6.9 so I took 2 Glyburide & went to bed.
In the morning my B.S was 2.8!
All day it never got higher than 4.2 no matter what I did or ate. It got as low as 2.2 A few times, but mostly between 2.5 – 3.3 mmol/L.
    I’ll keep monitoring it today.
    NOT a fun experience!
