Are Ketones Poisons or Therapeutic Fuel? | Diabetic Ketoacidosis vs. Nutritional Ketosis – Dr.Berg

`You may have heard rumors that ketones are dangerous, but that’s completely untrue.

0:00 Ketones are therapeutic, although you may have have heard rumors they’re dangerous
1:36 Ketones are neuroprotective
2:40 High levels of glucose are harmful to your health

A woman asked me how to respond to her doctor, who told her that being in ketosis is life-threatening. This is completely untrue – yet it’s a surprisingly common mistake that medical professionals make. They confuse nutritional ketosis with another condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, which is indeed life-threatening. It happens if you’re a type 1 diabetic who runs out of insulin, which allows your ketone levels to rise to dangerous amounts. But if you’re not a type 1 diabetic, you won’t run out of insulin, and you aren’t at risk for ketoacidosis.

By contrast, you get into ketosis by dropping your carbohydrate consumption. Your body turns its own fat, and the fat you eat, into ketones. Ketones are therapeutic for your body. They aren’t dangerous!

A lot of research is being done on the benefits of ketones for someone with a brain injury. Ketones are a more efficient fuel. They need less oxygen, and produce less waste than glucose. They’re neuroprotective; they guard against nerve damage caused by high levels of glucose. When you switch to a ketogenic diet, you can actually recover damaged brain cells. Your energy goes up; your need for sleep decreases; you can actually decrease your blood flow by nearly forty percent.

Being in ketosis can help prevent protein from accumulating in the brain, preventing the amyloid plaques that lead to Alzheimer’s.

The real danger is high levels of glucose, which can cause substantial health problems including: brain shrinkage, fluid retention, memory loss, mood disorders, oxidative damage, glycation, fatigue, lowered oxygen levels, and amyloid plaques.

See how therapeutic ketones truly are?

    1. Ketones Not Glucose

Katie Mayflower No, the saddest medical story ever is that the American Medical Association is governed by the pharmaceutical companies and their most profitable area is all things cancer… They have a 3% success rate for both chemotherapy and radiation, yet… Both of these archaic practices are carcinogens… Yes… That means that they actually cause cancer! They average $500,000 per diagnosis… You know… On meaningless tests, pills and operations… And I learned that fifty percent of the cost of these toxic drugs are paid back to these oncologist/murderers…

uneducated, or outdated information, same difference. Just because they “Know things” others dont doesnt mean they know every thing and should not be defended when they screw up. Prime example, Giving insulin resistant people insulin. i think I get why they do. People arent going to quit eating sugar so they look for an excuse to keep eating sugar and doctors know this, so they pacify them. the problem is, they dont even introduce alternative options which is immoral and dangerous

Valerie Loveless they are not uneducated but they have great education and knowledge in human physiology, biochemistry ,disease , pharmacology, anatomy, histology, immunology and other things greater than ordinary people or nutritionist or chairopractors or physiotherapist the only thing is they haven’t enough education or insight on ketosis and health benefits of ketosis. First of all one must have knowledge on a subject to give others valuable information unfortunately not all of the doctors have enough education in matter of ketosis . And just analyze it this way if ketogenic diet were a cure of cancer then why would multinational companies invest billions and billions in medicines rather they could produce grass fed beef and free range non antibiotics poultry , non gmo seeds and vegetables and fruits . But it isn’t the case yes ketogenic diet is healthy and great but Doctor unaware about ketogenic diet would obviously suggest that it is bad as he has studied it and experiences it over his period of education . So calling people uneducated based on a single thing that they don’t know isn’t good because no one knows everything in this world but it our duty or people who has knowledge on ketogenic diet must make them aware and they will certainly give it a look and try to learn and implement it .

“Sola docis facit venenum”. That ladie’s doctor should have known that. In case he doesn’t it roughly means: “The dose makes the poison”. Maybe the lady should go see either a competent doctor, or one that is interested in learning and thus keep improving himself. 😁

Thanks for your great videos Dr Berg. You have helped me a lot in reforming my lifestyle & for this I will forever have tremendous gratitude for you.
I am an asthma patient & have noticed great improvement in my health post keto adaptation. Is it because ketone bodies require less oxygen? Can you help me in understanding the science behind this as I can now confidently say that ketosis helps in curing asthma?

With all of the great info. we get on the internet, it makes you almost afraid to go to a doctor these days. They seem to know only 1 of 2 things, prescriptions or surgery. Don’t they read and keep up on any of this new information?

    1. EYE OF GOD

They’re in the System . They have to keep it funded and up and running, if they don’t the Medical System & Pharmaceutical Industry will collapse and millions of people will be out of work. To Hell with peoples’ health and well being. Dr Berg is the best, he genuinely cares about people 👏🏻

I keep having vivid dreams since being on Ketosis. In one dream, I am strumming a guitar and jamming out on stage in a rock band. In another dream, I’m screaming at my husband in the street and having a massive blow-out marriage ending fight. (We have a great marriage in reality.) My mind is going nuts!

Dr. Berg, any advice on interpreting the results of keto urinalysis? I have found so much conflicting information, it’s all very confusing. I am three weeks in and feeling much better! Just wondering what your take is on this.

Will all of this work if you are 60+? Can you recover damage brain and nerve cell at 60? I love Keto and I really hope that by doing it faithfully these ketones will reward me with good health.

  8. Neil Flavelle

Hi Dr Berg, please make a video about honokiol which is a compound found in magnolia bark which recently was discovered to induce autophagy (among other benefits) I wonder if 168 fasting and supplementing with magnolia will create an autophagy synergy. Thanks for all the free information – you really turned my life around!
