a. The body is producing way too much blood acids (ketones)
2. Why is it related to metabolic acidosis?
a. Your body is not producing enough insulin which prevents glucose from entering the cells. To compensate, your body produces ketones. Ketones is a chemical that breaks down fat to use for energy. Too much ketones in the bloodstream will cause metabolic acidosis

a. Diabetic patients
b. Uncontrolled Diabetes
c. Family History of Diabetes
d. Long term use of steroids
4. Signs and Symptoms
a. Confusion
b. Too much sugar (Hyperglycemia)
c. Mouth has fruity odor
d. Ketones in the urine
e. Elevated blood glucose (400 and up)
5. Intervention
a. Accucheck
b. Correct Hyperglycemia
c. Monitor heart rate and blood pressure
d. Weight loss
e. Diet and Exercise
6. Medication
1. Bolus Insulin
2. Normal Saline (Isotonic Fluid)
